How to Pay for DigitalOcean Harness Runtimepublic

Last verified 6 Oct 2026

DigitalOcean Harness Runtime provides managed, hardware-isolated microVM sandboxes with built-in tools such as Chromium to run harnesses and execute arbitrary code. Rich lifecycle APIs preserve conversational history and working state across sessions, letting you pause, resume, and fork work to control costs and adapt to the nonlinear nature of agentic workflows. Scale complete agents such as Claude Code or use sandboxes independently for code execution, all through the same service. See What You Can Build for example use cases.

DigitalOcean Harness Runtime requires funds in at least one balance before you can start sessions: an Agent Droplets subscription balance, promotional credits, the Inference and Agents balance, or your account prepayment balance. DigitalOcean deducts usage as you incur it, in the order described in How Your Usage Is Paid For.

For rates, Agent Droplets plans, and which usage the plans discount, see Harness Runtime Pricing.

Ways to Pay for Harness Runtime

You can pay for Harness Runtime usage with an Agent Droplets plan, the Inference and Agents balance, the account prepayment balance, or any combination of them:

Agent Droplets plan Inference and Agents balance Account prepayment balance
Rate Discounted Standard Standard
Commitment Monthly, renews automatically None None
Unused funds Expire monthly, with exceptions Do not expire Stay on your account
Covers Managed Agents usage, with eligible usage discounted Managed Agents and Serverless Inference All DigitalOcean products
How to fund Subscribe to a plan Add funds Make a payment

We recommend a plan if you run agents most months and your usage is steady. If your usage is occasional or unpredictable, add funds to your Inference and Agents balance instead. It keeps agent spend separate from your other DigitalOcean products without a monthly commitment.

How Your Usage Is Paid For

Serverless Inference, Harness Runtime, and the Action Gateway tools that require prepayment can draw from two prepaid balances on your team:

  • The Inference and Agents balance, which only Serverless Inference and Managed Agents draw from. Charges from other products never reduce it.
  • The account prepayment balance, which applies to your entire account (your current team). Usage charges from all DigitalOcean products, such as Droplets or Managed Databases, draw from it.

Usage draws from your credits and balances in this order:

  1. Your Agent Droplets subscription balance, if you subscribe to a plan. It covers your Managed Agents usage. Eligible usage is billed at discounted rates, and other Managed Agents usage, such as third-party models, is billed at standard rates. After the subscription balance is used, all further usage bills at standard rates.
  2. Promotional credits.
  3. The Inference and Agents balance.
  4. The account prepayment balance.

New customers receive a $5 promotional credit for Managed Agents usage. Without a plan, the $5 credit is used first. With a plan, your subscription balance is used first, and the $5 credit is used after the subscription balance runs out. When the credit is gone, you can subscribe to a plan, add funds to the Inference and Agents balance, or use the account prepayment balance. Existing customers do not receive the $5 credit and can subscribe or add funds at any time.

Promotional credits apply to Serverless Inference, Harness Runtime, and Action Gateway, so these products keep running while you have credits, even if both prepaid balances are at $0. An Agent Droplets subscription balance keeps Harness Runtime and Action Gateway running the same way, including managed agents making Serverless Inference calls. When your credits, subscription balance, and both prepaid balances are empty, DigitalOcean stops prepaid spend for these products until you add funds. Action Gateway tools that do not require prepayment are not blocked by the gateway’s balance check.

Other products continue running as usual, even if their charges are what depleted the account prepayment balance. Those products keep accruing usage against your account.

For example, if you add a $500 prepayment to your account:

  1. You run Serverless Inference workloads that cost $100, leaving a balance of $400.
  2. Your Droplets accrue $250 in usage charges, leaving a balance of $150.

Only the remaining $150 is available for prepaid products. If charges from other products bring the account prepayment balance down to $0, DigitalOcean stops prepaid spend for those products until you add more funds, but your Droplets and other resources continue running without interruption.

If you add the same $500 to your Inference and Agents balance instead, the $250 in Droplet charges bill on your monthly invoice, and $400 remains available for prepaid products.

To keep a separate prepaid budget for these workloads, add funds to your Inference and Agents balance. To avoid interruptions, enable auto-reload to replenish the balance automatically.

You can also create a dedicated team for these workloads. Each team maintains its own prepaid balances, so charges from resources on your other teams do not draw them down.

Note

Teams that belong to an organization draw from the organization’s Inference and Agents balance and account prepayment balance, which the organization funds. They do not support team-specific balances. To keep a separate balance, create a standalone team outside of your organization.

For Action Gateway tool calls at $0, see Manage Action Gateway Prepayment.

Manage Your Agent Droplets Plan

Agent Droplets plans are monthly subscriptions that discount eligible Managed Agents usage. They are in public preview. For plan fees, discount rates, and which usage is eligible, see Agent Droplets.

Subscribe to an Agent Droplets Plan

To subscribe:

  1. Go to the Harness Runtime page in the control panel. Under the Pro or Team plan, click Select plan.

  2. On the Confirm subscription page, under Payment Methods, check that you have a saved payment method. If you don’t, click Add Payment Method to add one.

  3. Review the Order summary, which shows the plan and the amount due today, then click Confirm subscription.

When you subscribe, DigitalOcean charges the full monthly plan fee and adds it to your subscription balance right away, even if you subscribe partway through a month. Plan fees are billed in advance and exclude taxes.

How Your Subscription Balance Renews

At the start of each billing month, DigitalOcean charges your plan fee and adds it to your subscription balance. Subscription balance left over from the previous month expires, with two exceptions:

  • First month: Unused balance from the month you subscribe carries over to the following month. For example, you subscribe to the Pro plan on 20 September and use $20 of your subscription balance by 1 October. The remaining $30 carries over, so you have $80 for October. Any of that $80 you don’t use by the end of October expires.
  • Upgrades: Unused balance from a mid-month upgrade carries over to the following month. See Upgrade Your Plan.

When your subscription balance runs out, usage continues at standard rates from your other balances. There is no setting to stop usage when your subscription balance reaches $0. Instead, the control panel shows banner warnings as your balances reach set thresholds.

Upgrade Your Plan

You can upgrade from the Pro plan to the Team plan at any time. Unlike downgrades, upgrades take effect immediately. When you confirm, we charge the $150 difference between the two plan fees, and the checkout page shows the breakdown. You receive the $150 as additional subscription balance, and your eligible usage for the whole month is discounted at the Team plan’s 20% rate. For example, if you have $80 of subscription balance when you upgrade, you have $230 for the rest of the month. The $150 from the upgrade can carry over to the next month.

To upgrade, go to the Subscriptions section of the Billing page. In the Managed Agents row, click Change, then click Change plan. In the Change Managed Agents plan window, select the Team plan, then click Switch plan.

Downgrade or Cancel Your Plan

Downgrades from the Team plan to the Pro plan and cancellations take effect at the start of the next billing month. Your current plan and its discount stay in effect until then. For example, if you cancel in November, your plan ends on 1 December and does not renew. You can use your remaining subscription balance until then, and any balance left at the end of the month expires. We do not refund plan fees.

You manage your subscription from the Subscriptions section of the Billing page. The Managed Agents row shows your current plan, when it resets, and how much subscription balance remains.

To downgrade, in the Managed Agents row, click Change, then click Change plan. In the Change Managed Agents plan window, select the Pro plan, then click Switch plan.

To cancel, in the Managed Agents row, click Change, then click Cancel subscription. In the Cancel Managed Agents subscription window, click Cancel subscription to confirm. Your subscription stays active until the end of the current billing period. After that, Harness Runtime usage draws from your other balances.

What Happens When All Your Balances Are Empty

When your subscription balance, promotional credits, Inference and Agents balance, and account prepayment balance are all empty:

  • Running sessions pause at the next safe stopping point. The session list shows a low-balance pause reason. Workspace state and conversation history are preserved.
  • Snapshot and checkpoint storage for retained sessions continues to accrue charges. Delete checkpoints you do not need, or destroy the session to remove its snapshots and checkpoints. Keep the most recent pause snapshot if you plan to resume the session after you add funds.
  • Paused sessions cannot make Action Gateway tool calls, regardless of whether those tools require prepayment. DigitalOcean-hosted inference is also blocked.
  • You cannot start, resume, fork, or restore sessions, and you cannot send new input to a paused session.
  • You cannot create new environments or triggers.
  • You cannot create new checkpoints.

Session calls are unblocked after you add funds, auto-reload tops up your Inference and Agents balance, or you subscribe to or upgrade an Agent Droplets plan. You can then start new sessions and resume sessions that were paused for low balance. To have a paused session resume on its own when funds are added, start it with the --resume-on-topoff flag. See How to Create an Environment Using a Coding Adapter.

To add funds or enable auto-reload, see Inference and Agents Balance. You can also view your balances on the Billing page and make an account prepayment.
