Pronouns

Use pronouns that are inclusive, accurate, and unambiguous. Prioritize clarity while respecting a diverse range of identities and communication preferences.
General Rules
Use these rules to choose pronouns that maintain clarity while remaining respectful and inclusive.
-
Use “they” as a gender-neutral pronoun for both individuals and groups.
-
When clarity matters more than pronoun choice, use the person’s name, role, or title instead of a pronoun. For example, “The developer can update their configuration”.
Avoiding Assumptions
Avoid making assumptions about a person’s gender, identity, or perspective when choosing pronouns or examples.
-
Do not assume or assign gender when referring to hypothetical users, customers, or roles.
-
Avoid using pronouns if doing so introduces ambiguity. Rewrite the sentence for clarity instead.
