# IPv6 API Reference [IP addresses](https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/understanding-ip-addresses-subnets-and-cidr-notation-for-networking) let machines communicate across a network. DigitalOcean Droplets are assigned IPv4 addresses by default. Enabling IPv6 on a Droplet gives you access to its 16 additional IPv6 addresses. The IPv6 API endpoints are organized into the following groups: - [**Reserved IPv6**](reserved-ipv6/) (4 endpoints): DigitalOcean Reserved IPv6s are publicly-accessible static IP addresses that can be mapped to one of your Droplets. They can be used to create highly available setups or other configurations requiring movable addresses. - [**Reserved IPv6 Actions**](reserved-ipv6-actions/) (1 endpoints): Reserved IPv6 actions requests are made on the actions endpoint of a specific reserved IPv6.
