# DigitalOcean MicroVMs Reference (public)

DigitalOcean MicroVMs are lightweight virtual machines that run a container image in an isolated kernel, pause automatically when idle, and resume on the next request with memory, files, and processes intact.

## The DigitalOcean API

The [DigitalOcean API](https://docs.digitalocean.com/reference/index.html.md) lets you manage resources programmatically with standard HTTP requests. All actions available in the control panel are also available through the API.

MicroVMs use the `/v2/microvms` endpoints. For the objects, endpoints, and fields, see [MicroVMs API and doctl Reference](https://docs.digitalocean.com/products/microvms/reference/endpoints-and-commands/index.html.md).

## The DigitalOcean Command Line Client, doctl

[`doctl`](https://github.com/digitalocean/doctl) is the command-line interface for the DigitalOcean API. It supports most of the same actions available in the API and DigitalOcean Control Panel.

MicroVMs use the `doctl compute microvm` commands, in `doctl` v1.173.0 and later. For the commands and flags, see [MicroVMs API and doctl Reference](https://docs.digitalocean.com/products/microvms/reference/endpoints-and-commands/index.html.md#doctl-commands).
