How to Manage Credit and Debit Cards on DigitalOcean

DigitalOcean accepts the following payment methods:

  • Credit and debit cards. You can set credit and debit cards as your primary payment method. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover credit cards.

Credit and debit cards from India need to be enabled for international transactions. Cards issued by Citibank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, IndusInd Bank, RBL Bank, Axis Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank are less likely to be declined than other banks.

  • PayPal. We accept pre-payment using PayPal but you cannot use it as your primary payment method.

We do not accept virtual, electron, or prepaid cards.

DigitalOcean’s terms of service prohibit credit cards issued in or with billing addresses from OFAC-sanctioned countries. For more information, including a list of countries, see section 5.7 of our Rules of Conduct in our terms of service.

Add a Card

To add a new credit or debit card, click Add card to open the Add a Card window.

The Add a Card window

In the window that opens, fill in the card information, then click Save Card.

When you add a credit card to your DigitalOcean account, we may send a preauthorization request to the issuing bank. This is to verify that the card being added has been issued by the bank and that they will authorize the charges. These temporary preauthorization holds range from $1 to $15 and may appear on your statement for up to 7 days, but no funds are being transferred from your card or account to DigitalOcean.

When you have more than one card added to your account, you can designate which one should be billed by default. You can either check the box next to Make this my default payment method when you add a card, or you can open the menu of any card and click Make Default.

Edit Card Information

To update the information for an existing card on your account, open the menu of the card and click Edit to open the Edit Card window.

Delete a Card

To remove a credit or debit card, click the menu of the card, then click Delete. In the Confirm Delete Card window that opens, click Delete to remove the card. You cannot remove a card if it is the default payment method for your account.

Help with Payments

Can I have a refund?

We do not offer refunds. If there are extenuating circumstances, contact support.

Can I have an extension on the due date of my bill?

We do not offer extensions. We charge the account on the first of the month. If your account remains past due, your account will be suspended. If you need more time to pay your bill, contact support.

My credit card expired or was declined, so my payment failed. How do I prevent my account from being suspended?

Prevent your account from being suspended by making a payment. You can add a new card, update an existing card, or pay via PayPal.

If there is an outstanding balance on the account, your updated card will be charged within 24 hours. Otherwise, your card is charged at the end of the monthly billing cycle.

Why was my credit card declined?

There are many reasons why a card may be declined, but banks typically don’t pass this information along to DigitalOcean. It is also not unusual for a card to work in some situations and not others. We recommend that you contact your bank. They should be able to tell you more about the declined payment and root cause.
